LIVERPOOL or CHELSEA
One of the interesting fixtures for the English Football League Cup is the Blues vs the Reds game to take place at Anfield. Liverpool look to maintain a 100% record as they take on an unbeaten Chelsea side. Below we take a look at the first meeting between these sides this season. They will also be squaring up in the English Premier league this weekend, that’s twice in less than seven days.
After an impressive day one match in the champion’s league against the French champions, Paris Saint Germain. They returned to the English Premier League and much to the dismay of rival supporters still beat Southampton comfortably by three goals. They now have six wins from six games in the league and seven wins out of seven games in all competitions.
First few games were pretty easy wins but the last two (PSG and Tottenham) showed the team would really be difficult to beat. The defense was always their main problem last season. Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson have come into the back setup and it’s looking more disciplined.
However, a mistake from new goalie Allison saw him give away his clean sheet record to Leicester. Next Tottenham also got one in the back of the net. PSG also scored twice to get back on level terms before Firminho snatched the winner for the Reds. Chelsea would be looking to exploit such mistakes at the back.
Sarri’s team failed to find the net for the first time in the new campaign against a much disciplined west Ham defense. But with Liverpool playing in a fairly open way scoring shouldn’t be the issue here. Prior to the stalemate affair with the Hammers, they had a thrilling 3-2 game with fellow London club Arsenal. The former Napoli manager is not renowned for his defensive ability. Chelsea have conceded in three out of six fixtures thus far.
Liverpool’s attacking force doesn’t give Chelsea hopes of keeping a clean sheet and the blues themselves have scored 15 goals in seven matches, we also expect them to get on the score sheet.
• Four of Chelsea’s seven matches have seen at least three goals.
• Five of Liverpool’s competitive games this season have seen over 2.5 goals.
• Liverpool have lost their last three league cup matches without scoring a goal.
• Liverpool have won only two of their last 14 games against Chelsea in all competitions.
• Chelsea have progressed from each of their last seven league cup third round ties since losing to Newcastle in 2010-2011
None of Chelsea’s last eight managers have lost their first matches in the league cup.
head to head
These two sides last meeting in the league cup saw Chelsea come out triumphant on an aggregate of 2-1. Meanwhile three of their last six meetings have ended in a draw with Chelsea winning two and Liverpool winning one.
Liverpool has Dejan lovren, divock Origi, Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all on the injury list. Most recently Virgil Van Dijk also picked up a knock and could be a doubt for this fixture.
For the away team Pedro would be on the sidelines as he makes his recovery from a shoulder injury. Kovacic also recovered in time to play on Sunday and should be fit for this fixture. Emerson who was on the sidelines due to a sore throat should be available for this fixture.
This first game would most likely see both managers rotating their squads heavily.
